Essays and Critical Writings includes drafts and notes for some of Gaddis' later published articles, including "Erewhon and the Contract with America," "The Rush for Second Place," and "Old Foes with New Faces," the last article having been delivered in an earlier form at "The Writer and Religion" conference held at Washington University in 1994.
