Biographical Information

Katherine M. (Katie) Corbitt (March 15, 1873-June 17, 1900) was born in St. Louis to James M. and Maria E. Jenkins Corbitt. Her father, a prosperous businessman, also served as city councilman and police commissioner before his death in 1893. Katherine's secure financial position allowed her the luxury of a European "grand tour," probably in the company of a friend or relative. Katherine Corbitt died on June 17, 1900, at the age of 27 due to complications after a laparotomy.

The diaries were probably given to Washington University by Arthur C. Hoskins, Katherine Corbitt's nephew.
