Series of essays on the history and development of various St. Louis institutions and organizations including the zoo, the city art museum, Missouri Historical Society, granting of charters, water works, the governors of upper Louisiana (1764-1804), St. Louis public library, civil courthouse and various court buildings, Veiled Prophet Society, the morgue, the Freedmen's Bureau, the Louisiana Purchase exposition, Washington Square, Missouri Park, Forest Park, Chain of Rock park, the public works of Henry Shaw, House of refuge, recreation and city playgrounds, musical organizations, fire department, police department, dog control, early business practices, prisons, workhouses, hospitals, post office, insane asylum, Union Station, army depots, highways, Fairground park, public school system, churches, others. circa 400 pages.

Miscellaneous includes manuscript sheets of preparatory work for the essays, and some sheets of biographical information on various early city officials. Some photocopy material including a map of the Indian mounds taken from Beck's Gazetteer of Illinois and Missouri, printed page of meteorological account of 1927 tornado, others. circa 15 pages.
