Biographical Information

Max Kahn (March 15, 1903 - May 29, 2005) was an artist born in Russia and came to the United States in 1907 as a small child. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley College in Peoria, Illinois. He then went on to study in Paris (1926-1928) at the Academy Suede West on the Right Bank. He studied sculpture with Emile Antoine Bourdelle and Charles Despiau, and drawing with Othon Friesz. He also studied in New York at the Beaux Arts and in Chicago at the School of the Art Institute.

Kahn taught lithography at John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis; Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Arts, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; and from 1944 to 1959 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he gained the rank of professor. From 1959 to 1969 Max Kahn taught at the University of Chicago.

Kahn participated in numerous one-man and group exhibitions in Chicago and around the world. His works are in the collections of over 30 museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum of Art, Illinois State Museum, Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum in New York, Philadelphia Museum, National Gallery of Canada, and National Gallery and Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.
