Pearl Archive largely consists of editorial materials toward the complete run of Pearl magazine from 1975-1993 including correspondence, manuscripts and typescripts, camera-ready copies, galleys, paste-ups, and more. The collection also includes additional literary correspondence between Gregory Stephenson and writers including Kay Boyle, Andrei Codrescu, Ira Cohen, Cid Corman, Guy Davenport, Larry Eigner, Clayton Eshleman, Kimon Friar, David Gascoyne, Maurice Girodias, Donald Hall, Mark Halperin, Maxine Kumin, Denise Levertov, Archibald MacLeish, Philip O’Connor, Edouard Roditi, George Starbuck, C.K. Historical Information

The first issue of Pearl appeared in the summer/fall of 1975, edited by Gregory Stephenson, an American expatriate writer then living in Odense, with the help of his Danish wife Birgit. Nine issues were produced, ending production in the spring of 1982. During the 1990s, Lars Rasmussen, owner and proprietor of The Booktrader in Copenhagen, began to publish Pearl. It was named by the Library Journal as one of the ten best literary magazines in the world. Pearl discontinued publication in 1993.

Pearl prominently featured Beat writers including William Burroughs, Alan Ginsburg, Gregory Corso, George Starbuck, Ira Cohen, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Additional writers include W. H Auden, Joyce Carol Oates, Denise Levertov, Robert Bly, Cid Corman, Robert Sward, Paul Bowles, James Tate, Rita Dove, David Ignatow, Edouard Roditi, Grace Schulman, Christopher Logue, Kimon Friar, Kay Boyle, John Ciardi, Charles Bukowski, Diane di Prima, Donald Hall, Michael McClure, James Laughlin, and more.
