Biographical Information

Jacob Klein (September 1, 1845-August 23, 1910) was an American lawyer and judge.  Born in Germany, Klein settled with his family in St. Louis, Missouri in 1851.  Klein was educated in the St. Louis public schools, and afterward began the study of law in the office of Seymour Voullaire and later the firm of Knox and Smith.  In 1869, he was admitted to the bar.  After a year of practice, he went through a course at Harvard Law School to complete his legal education; he graduated in the class of 1871.  In 1881, Klein partnered with William E. Fisse to build the firm Klein and Fisse.  Klein was elected judge of the Circuit Court of St. Louis in January 1899 and remained in that position until January 1901.

In his spare time, Klein collected English and American literature, manuscripts, portraits and woodcuts. His library was sold at auction in February, 1911, after his death.
