Biographical Information

Mitchell Kennerley (August 14, 1878 - February 22, 1950) was an American publisher, editor, and gallery owner, born in Burslem, England. Kennerley managed the New York branch of London publisher John Lane from 1896 to 1900, continued as business manager of Smart Set, and founded the Reader magazine in 1901.

In 1906 he got into the book publishing business, using Frederic W. Goudy's distinctive types. In 1913, Kennerley was arrested on obscenity charges in connection with one of his publications, the novel Hagar Revelly by Daniel Carson Goodman (a 30-year-old St. Louis physician). A jury eventually found Kennerley not guilty.

Kennerley went on to run the Anderson and Parke-Bernet galleries in New York City, where he died in 1950.
