Thibaut Manuscript
Fragment of the Roman de la Poire, a medieval French romance written by Thibaut, an imitator of Guillaume de Lorris, in the 13th century. It is influenced by the Roman de la Rose in describing the onset of love in terms of allegory and in its frequent use of the first person. The title is derived from a central scene where the damsel shares with her lover a pear that she has peeled with her teeth. The main text is preserved in BnF Ms. fr. 2186, an illuminated manuscript dated to the 1250s.
Manuscript fragment on parchment (2 pages on 1 leaf). Text (24 x 13 cm) in 2 columns of 44 lines, except column 1 on recto, which has 43 lines. Initial letter of each line set off from main column. Recto has two-line initial "A" in red, faintly outlined in green; verso has two-line initial "B" in red (apparently an error by the copyist; cf. O'Gorman). Evidence of former binding or guard sheet. Later marginalia: pen strokes, notes in German, approximately 15th century; very faint; name "Jann ____" upside-down at foot of recto. Recto right side has clear drawing of a knight in 15th-century German-style armor, holding a lance with banner in his right hand, a sword in his left. Fragment corresponds to verses 933-1111 of the critical edition. Cf. O'Gorman, page 363.
Copied with characteristics of Bourguignon and Champenois dialects of eastern France. Cf. O'Gorman, page 365.
