Biographical Information

Maurice Thomson (September 30, 1604-May 9, 1676) was an English merchant banker, Puritan, and business manager for the second Earl of Warwick. He was also involved in slave trafficking. Baptized in Hertfordshire, England, in 1604, he eventually lived in Virginia, Canada, the Caribbean, and other places. Thomson obtained a monopoly of the Virginia tobacco trade and was said to be "England's greatest colonial merchant of his day." His son John was raised to the peerage as Lord Haversham in 1696.
