Provenance: sent to R.B.D. French for Madeleine Murray; sold at Sotheby’s 15 July 1998.

“Chien anagramme de niche.” In French: ‘dog’ is an annogram of ‘kennel, being a dialogue in French between “A” and “B”.

According to a newspaper article in the Times, October 25, 1969, the original of this item was sent to Beckett by R.B.D. French in response to French’s request for a scrap of manuscript.

Together with an autograph note, signed (“Sam”), dated May 22, 1969, in blue ink, to R.B.D. French: Thanks for your good letter of May 17. Shall therefore assemble what I can find here and in the country and write then at greater length sometime in June. The extra scrap with the heart and the halt. Greetings to Skinny, yours ever, Sam

Accompanied by a second card  saying only "Perhaps for your friend?”.
