Historical Information
The John B. Ervin Scholars Program is a merit-bases scholarship program established at Washington University in 1987. Founded by James E. “Jim” McLeod, vice chancellor for students and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the scholarship program was designed to foster a richly diverse educational atmosphere on campus and to enhance the overall quality and diversity of the university’s student body. Named for Dr. John B. Ervin (1916-1992), the first Black Dean at Washington University, the program has attracted, recruited, retained, and graduated over 600 students deemed to exemplify extraordinary commitments to four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, and diversity.
