Biographical or Historical Information

Charles E. Cory was born in Thornburg, Iowa on December 6, 1878. He studied at Drake University, Yale, Harvard, and the Universities of Berlin and Leipzig. At Drake he earned his A.B. in 1901 and an A.M. in 1902. From Yale he received an A.M. in 1903 and a Ph.D. in 1904. At Harvard he took the S.T.B. degree in 1907. His doctoral dissertation was An Examination of the Doctrines of Hegel, Especially Their Bearing upon the Spiritual Interests of Man.

Cory’s entire professional career was spent at Washington University in St. Louis where he became an instructor in 1907. He rose through the ranks to Professor in 1920 and was head of the Department from 1921 to his retirement in 1949. He died on March 2, 1965 of a heart ailment.

This material was donated to University Archives March 1, 1966 by Mrs. Joseph Kellerman.
