Additional Description

Biographical or Historical Information

Washington University provided for and supported a branch of its Department of Social Work, located in Kansas City, as a temporary unit beginning in 1938. For nine years, Washington University continued to support this unit as it gained popularity and importance in the community. In 1947, Washington University passed its fiscal responsibility for the program over to the University of Kansas, who agreed to continue to support the program as long as members of the Kansas City community also contributed to the program’s maintenance.

Method of Acquisition

This material was donated to the University Archives as part of an addition in 2009 for the Ralph and Muriel Pumphrey Papers. Notations on original box indicated these papers were saved by Ralph Pumphrey on behalf of the department, circa 1960s.
