Historical Information
Starting in 1975 at the University of Tennessee, a series of conferences were held at various college campuses under the title of “Men and Masculinity.” The 4th National Conference on Men and Masculinity, “Creating A Movement For Change” was held in St. Louis, Missouri on the campus of Washington University November 24 – 27, 1977. Workshops were conduced on topics including sexism and racism, sex-role stereotyping in schools, rape, sexuality, fathering, and changing men’s image in the media.
By the 1980s what was an informal organization took on the name “National Organization for Changing Men” (NOCM) and created a more formal governing structure. In 1990 the organization became the “National Organization for Men Against Sexism” (NOMAS), which as of 2006, continues to conduct annual conferences under the title of “Men and Masculinity.”
