Historical Information

Mary Institute in St. Louis was founded in 1859 as a female seminary and college preparatory school for Washington University. Mary Institute’s course of instruction closely matched that of its male equivalent, Smith Academy.

Method of Acquisition

The material in the collections was given to Archives by numerous university offices and individuals.
