Historical Information

The Henry Shaw School of Botany at Washington University was founded on November 6, 1885 to provide first-hand instruction for both undergraduate and graduate students of botany. The school was endowed by the generous donation of Henry Shaw (1800-89), a prosperous cutlery maker who founded the Missouri Botanical Garden in 1858 and deeded it to the city of St. Louis upon his death in 1889.  Shaw further augmented his gift of the Shaw School of Botany with the endowment of a professorship named after George Engelmann, a physician, noted botanist, and Shaw’s close advisor.
