Washington University Chancellor Reports and Messages Collection
This collection contains Chancellor’s Messages, Annual Reports, Financial Statements, and Letters from the Chancellor. These materials contain roughly the same information and inform the University community of the school’s financial situation and give updates on campus activities and an overview of what the University is currently doing. The majority of these materials are written by the chancellors although there are some which are written by others within the University administration. The contents of the collection are arranged first by format and then chronologically.

Historical Information
Washington University in St. Louis was founded in 1853 with its inauguration in 1857. Washington University is a medium-sized, independent university. Annual reports and Chancellor’s messages are part of the records of the University.
Arrangement
This collection is divided into three series:
Series 01: The Chancellor’s Messages (1957-1969) includes speeches and booklets with specific topics. After 1966, the messages are called the “Quarterly Message” and were presented in a published form.
Series 02: The Chancellor’s Letters (1958-1995) to Faculty, Staff, and/or community. Also includes two undated addresses.
Series 03: Annual Publications including Annual Reports and Financial Summaries (1874-2002). These were published separately from 1962 until 1972. From 1973 until 2002 the two components were published in a single booklet. Two sets of these materials are included in bound editions.
