Biographical or Historical Information

The Carl Schurz tour invited approximately fifty professors and students from twenty-five American universities to participate in a tour of thirty-five cities and towns in Germany in the summer of 1934, paying special attention to scientific, educational, and cultural institutions. The tour was arranged by the Carl Schurz Foundation in Berlin, Germany.

Walter Rist (1907-1988) was a graduate assistant in the Department of German at Washington University when he participated in the tour.
