This collection is comprised of 14 copies of the inaugural program for Washington University. The program includes introductory remarks by Rev. Dr. William Greenleaf Eliot (President of the Corporation), and addresses by J.D. Low (Principal of the Academic Department), John How (Former St. Louis Mayor and President of the O’Fallon Polytechnic Institute), Samuel Treat (Judge of the United States Court District of Missouri), Rev. Dr. Post (Professor of Ancient and Modern History) and Edward Everett.  Two additional copies may be found in the Washington University Archives Reference Collection (LD5797.7 1857).

Historical Information

Washington University in St. Louis was founded by an act of incorporation by means of a legislative charter on February 22, 1853. Devoted to the intellectual and cultural betterment of the St. Louis community, Washington University, first known as Eliot Seminary, was formally opened for classes on April 23, 1857.
