Historical Information
The Provost is the chief academic officer of the University, responsible for teaching, learning, scholarship, and research across the Danforth Campus of Washington University. The Office of the Provost manages academic planning, budgeting, and facilities. University-wide curricular and co-curricular activities, including undergraduate and graduate education, diversity, internationalization, and outreach are important concerns of the Provost.
This position in the University’s Central Administration was created in 1945. Other titles including Dean of Faculties, Vice Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, and Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs have also been used in various years.
