Identifier: WUA-02-wua00226

The collection contains Washington University yearbooks from 1903 through the present. Years without publication of a yearbook are also indicated. The books are arranged chronologically by year published. Unbound materials are listed at the end. Volume numbering is partially inconsistent due to title changes. Until 1941 yearbooks contained information on the previous years’ class which is reflected in the dates in square brackets following each entry.

Historical Information

The first Washington University yearbook was given the title “The Hatchet” in reference to the story of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree. This name was used predominantly, although various editions were given different titles. Content of yearbooks varies widely from year to year. Student listings and photographs are not comprehensive of all enrolled students since the submission of portraits was done on a voluntary basis by students. Activities, events, and athletic information are sometimes found listed in the year or years following when it actually took place. Until approximately 1941 the yearbook was produced by the Junior class.
