The collection includes over 200,000 magazine tearsheets, 8000 magazines, 1200 books, and approximately 150 original works by American illustrators from the late 19th century well into the mid 20th century. Currently, the original works of art and reproductions of original art (series 1 through 5) are processed and included in this finding aid. The tearsheets, magazines, and books are still unprocessed and may not be readily available to researchers. Please call ahead.

Collection Historical Note

The Walt Reed Illustration Archive preserves the research library of its eponymous creator, author of The Illustrator in America and monographs on several leading 20th century illustrators. As founder of the Illustration House in New York, Walt Reed handled original works by major and minor figures alike. In the process he built a significant corpus of reference material.

Arrangement Note

Items are divided into series based on material type and art medium. The contents of the collection are currently arranged as follows: Series 1: Original Works of Art on Board Series 2: Original Works of Art on Paper Series 3: Original Works of Art on Canvas Series 4: Framed Original Works of Art Series 5: Reproductions of Original Works of Art Series 6: Magazine Tearsheets Series 7: Periodicals. Method of Acquisition

This collection was purchased in September 2012 by the Modern Graphic History Library, Department of Special Collections at Washington University in St. Louis, from the Illustration House.
