Biographical or Historical Information

Seymour Chwast is a designer and illustrator born in 1931 in New York City. An active designer throughout his entire life, Chwast is known for his unique illustrative style, which has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair, as well as posters, advertising, and children's books. In his work, Chwast often combines social issues and comical illustrations to create engaging design. Chwast, along with his Cooper Union schoolmates Milton Glaser, Edward Sorel, and Reynold Ruffins, founded Push Pin Studios in 1954. Though the studio began with freelance work solicited through their Push Pin Almanack publication, they became highly influential in the late 20th century. Pushpin's 1970 retrospective at the Louvre's Musée des Arts Décoratifs gained international acclaim and was later toured through Europe and Japan. The studio has affected visual media and culture through print, posters, product design, books, and their own publications. An archive of Chwast's work can be found online through the Seymour Chwast Archive, at http://www.seymourchwastarchive.com/
