Howard Jones was born in Illion, New York, in 1922. He received a BFA from Syracuse University in 1948, his schooling interrupted from 1942-1945 when he served as an Air Force fighter pilot during World War II. After graduating, Jones taught at Tulane University and Florida State University before accepting a position in Washington University’s School of Art in 1957, where he was Professor of Multimedia until his retirement in 1985. Although trained as a painter, in the 1950's Jones became interested in working with technology. By the early 1960’s he made light and sound his primary mediums, using them to explore concepts of time and space. During the next several years Jones became an important artist in his field and had several one-man exhibits around the country. He died in Missouri in 1991.
