The Karl S. Kaltenthaler Collection is comprised of comic books, zines, magazines, graphic novels, and miscellaneous materials. Comic books make up the bulk of the collection with approximately 1,500 items, spanning many genres and styles including superhero comics, war comics, horror comics, and alternative and underground titles. Featured prominently in the collection are some of the most revered and influential comic book artists and writers of the late twentieth century, including Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, Robert Crumb, Peter Bagge, and Daniel Clowes. The zines in the collection were published during the the early to mid 1980s, and focus primarily on underground music and punk.

Biographical or Historical Information

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Karl S. Kaltenthaler was an avid comic book collector, amassing a diverse collection of important late twentieth-century mainstream and underground titles during his lifetime. He died February 25, 2010.

Items are arranged according to type and size, and then alphabetically.

The contents of the collection are arranged in six series and three subseries as follows:

The collection was donated to the Modern Graphic History Library by Peg Kaltenthaler in May 2011.
