Description

Harold A. Zabrack was born on June 30, 1928 in St. Louis and died on February 2, 1995 in Creve Coeur, MO. Described as a “young lion” among pianst in the 1950s he studied piano with Rudolph Ganz, Max Wald and Carl Seemann at the Chicago Musical College (B.M. 1949; M.M. 1951). Zabrack was on the faculty from 1949-51. He was the recipient of a Fullbright grant in 1955-57 and went to West Germany. He continued studying for a doctorate at Indiana University in 1958-59. He then studied composition with Nadia Boulanger at Fontainebleau in 1962. Returning to St. Louis Zabrack accepted a teaching position on the faculty of Webster College (now Webster University) from 1962-65. He was composer-in-residence at the MacDowell Colony. In 1974 he left St. Louis to teach at Westminster Choir College. He won two ASCAP awards in 1977 and 1978. Zabrack maintained a solo career from the 1952 through the late 1980s appearing as a soloist in New York, St. Louis, San Diego, Milwaukee, Baton Rouge, and Vancouver. Zabrack published papers in The Journal of the American Liszt Society, Clavier, and The American Music Teacher as well as many piece of music mainly for piano.
